I've worked for the Social Democratic and Labour Party for years in various roles, and in more recent times as MLA for South Down and Minister for Social Development.

I came into politics to serve. Before politics I worked in the care sector, like my parents before me, both nurses. Politics is about service - about making peoples' lives better. I regard it as a tremendous honour to serve as an elected representative and also to carry the SDLP flag in Government.

I m now seeking to serve in a new role - that of Party Leader. I believe I have the right mix of vision and experience to take the SDLP forward.

I am passionate about the SDLP and, despite the reversals of recent years, passionate about the potential our Party still has to lead politics in the North and on this island.

Our organisation needs to be rebuilt and I have a detailed plan to do just that. But before we address the vital organisational work that must be done, we need to be clear about what our organisation, our Party is actually for. What do we stand for and how do we differ from others?

Over the coming months I intend to set out my vision for the SDLP in the period ahead. I hope you will hear it and discuss it. I also hope that you will come to share my view that this Vision offers the best way forward for the SDLP and those we seek to serve.

Best Regards

Margaret
